Did you know everyone has superpowers?
Yes! Even you and even when developing and implementing IEPs.

The problem is, we often discount our own superpowers, or think that if we have a particular ability, then it isn’t so special or powerful. And in working with 1000s upon 1000s of early educators, I’ve witnessed this doubt time and time again.
But in reality, it is our superpowers that not only make us unique, but make us effective and successful in our day-to-day interactions and work. And as often as I’ve witnessed doubt, I’ve also witnessed amazing successes when someone realizes their superpowers and puts them to work to solve problem and overcome obstacles.
Here are a few examples of what others have identified as their IEP Superpowers:
- bring people and concepts together
- find the goal beneath the goal
- ensure access to universally designed instruction
- pass information between team members
- justify accommodations, modifications, and supports
- advocate for placement and services
Yet, many have yet to realize their IEP Superpowers and may still struggle when it comes to working as a member of an IEP team.
That’s why I created the IEP Superpowers Quiz…to help early educators discover their strengths and give them targeted help for their weaknesses (aka “kryptonite”).

The IEP Superpowers Quiz stems from a body of work on the Essence Glossary™, which was created in collaboration with my colleague and friend, Mayra Porrata.
The quiz takes just a few minutes to complete and in the end, your unique strengths will be identified.
The quiz is ready for you here.
When answering the questions, be as honest as possible, selecting the option that best fits you. This quiz thrives on your true superpowers – not the ones you wish you had.
At the end, you’ll receive a detailed report (be sure to check your email) about your IEP Superpowers. And while we are all multifaceted individuals, you’ll likely have one “dominant” Superpower that will help in preparing for, creating, implementing, and monitoring IEPs for children and their families.
Here’s a quick overview of each of the IEP Superpowers:
- Solutionaries: Able to solve complex problems by sifting through all the information; invested in the facts and the logical outcome, which can be the result if the right information is gathered.
- Constructivists: Believe that anything is possible, even surviving one more IEP meeting; committed to getting the team together, as quickly as possible, and putting the plan into action.
- Planners: Knows when deadlines are approaching and seeks to ensure IEPs are in compliance; invested in getting the team to come together to determine what is really going on and making sure all the pieces and parts are in order to make critical decisions.
- Unifiers: Create harmony by helping all team members to feel heard and respected; committed to collaboration, role-release, and working from a place of strength.
